Building communities

These super creative students were divided into community building teams today.  As a team, they had a discussion to decide what type of community they would build...urban or rural.  Then they got straight to work.  I simply LOVE all of their ideas!

Giving Back

Recently, our Reading class read a story called Jamaica Louise James in which a little girl's grandma worked in a subway booth and she beautified the subway station by making beautiful drawings.  Since many of the students in my class only know Subway to be a restaurant, I called upon my friend Tony to help.  Tony grew up here in Marshall and now lives in New York.  He videoed a ride on the subway for us and sent it to our class.  When I asked if he would be willing to make a video, his reply was "I love any opportunity to give back to the children".  I wanna live like that.

Here is the video from Tony:

I sent the subway video out to my kiddos on their iPads, and they wrote down their thoughts and reflections.  Then, they made their own videos for Tony and sent them back to me.  I compiled them and sent them on to New York for Tony.

Here is the students' video:

Our class has a new friend who we never could have visited without the gift of technology in our classroom.  Thank you, Tony, for letting us "visit" the subway!!!  We loved it!!!

Exploring and Discovering

We are learning through discovery with rocks and dinosaur habitats.  We researched on the iPads and then went to town making our own discoveries and habitats.  It's a good day to be in 2nd grade!

America...

As we celebrate Constitution week, we are learning about Independence Hall and our founding fathers among other things.  We are learning of bravery, freedom, and perseverance...all things we want to be true of us as we learn and grow.

Go Lions We love #6!!!!

This year, second graders have adopted Tyler Setzer, a senior on the MHS football team, as our player to cheer the loudest for!  Tyler visited our classrooms, and we make things for him each week.  Tyler is a great role model for us as an athlete, but also as a student and a super guy!

Being Helpful

This month's character trait is helpful.  Mrs. Bethany and Mrs. Angel came to talk to all of 2nd grade about their jobs.  They are very helpful people!!! Some of us think we may want to have a job like theirs when we grow up!!

We want to live like that...

I asked my little posse to write down four facts about Martin Luther King, Jr. today while we watched a short video about his life.  As we were sharing the collected facts with the class, one of my sweet girls, in her quiet little voice said, "I wrote down that he said, 'hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.'".  It was one of those moments when heaven touches earth and you know that you are in a holy moment.  The class was quiet, my eyes got misty, and I said, "boys and girls, I want to live like that, don't you?".  My most feisty boy yelled out, "I DO TOO, MRS. WOOD!!!!".  Typically, he would have had to move his clip for blurting out, but we let it go that time.  I love my posse.  I hope that they will always live like that...

Learning and growing with iPads

All of 2nd grade has one to one iPads for this quarter, meaning that every student has an iPad.  We are only a week into it, and already the students have learned so much.  Today in Reading, I used an app called edmodo (the central hub for our classroom) to send out an assignment to the kids.  They opened and completed the assignment in an app called upad, then they sent it back to me in edmodo.  Of course, it took some of us more tries than others, but we all did it, and we cheered when everyone finished!!
